Kerala Padavalangya (Snake gourd) Ellisery

 




There are variety of ellisery with different combinations. This is one with Toor dal as lentil and one can use any vegetable of our choice like drumstick ,white pumpkin any leafy vegetable like drumstick leafs , palak etc. Even I have seen my mom preparing with cabbage.  Here I am using Padvalangya(Snake gourd) .Ellisery normally are of thick consistency. This is a traditional and popular dish made in every household in Kerala. As this dish is seasonal everyone dives on it. It’s my favorite dish too. This dish is less spicy.

 

Ingredients 

Toor dal 1/2cup

Padvalangya (snake guard) (cut into small pieces) -1 no

Turmeric Powder- 1 tsp.

Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp.

Curry Leaves

Rai 1tsp

Dry red chilly 2no

Curry leaf few

Salt as required 

For grinding

Coconut 3/4cup

Jeera a pinch

Small onion (shallots) 2no

Green chilly 2no

 

Method

Pressure cook dal with little turmeric and .Add and Cook padvalangya with salt in cooker and let it cook. It really cooks faster or else it will get smashed. Then add grinded mixture. Check for salt and spice level. Once done switch off. In kadai add coconut oil once hot add rai dry chilly and curry leaf. If in case you feel the curry is less spicy add ½ tsp. of chilly powder to tadka.

Garnish with curry leaves.
