Muringyakaya ela (drumstick leaf) ellisery

 


There are variety of ellisery with different combinations. This is one with Toor dal as lentil and one can use any leafy vegetable of our choice like variety of spinach. Spinach is locally available in every household. Drumstick tree is too grown in all houses. So freshly plucked drumstick leafs called as muringya ella is used for this recipe.  This is a traditional and popular dish made in every household in Kerala.

Drumstick leafs being high in nutrients is good for health. Goes awesome when served super hot with mango pickle.

 

Ingredients 

Toor dal 1/2cup

Muringya ella (Drumstick leaf) (cleaned and leaf separated from branches) -1 bunch

Turmeric Powder- 1 tsp.

Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp.

Rai 1tsp

Dry red chilly 2no

Curry leaf few

Salt as required 

For grinding

Coconut 3/4cup

Jeera a pinch

Small onion (shallots) 2no

Green chilly 2no

 

Method

Pressure cook dal with little turmeric.Once dal cooked add muringya leafs with salt in cooker and let it cook. It really cooks faster don’t overcook it. Then add grinded mixture. Check for salt and spice level. Once done switch off. In kadai add coconut oil once hot add rai dry chilly and curry leaf. If in case you feel the curry is less spicy add ½ tsp. of chilly powder to tadka.

Garnish with curry leaves. It comes in the category of one pot cooking . My grandma use to cook dal with water in heavy pot pan on fire which use to taste yummy.
