Muthira moloshyam (Horsegram )

Muthira moolosyam is a Thrissur special recipe. Muthira is a great source of proteins as well as a good source of minerals like magnesium, potassium and iron. In these type of recipe where it’s very rare to use red chili powder. But I add a little to get the color. So it’s optional as green chilies are better for health as per Ayurveda. So this might be my grandma’s secret of healthy body with no new generation diseases like cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes etc. This tastes yum with rice and curd and lime pickle. This recipe can also be categorized as one pot cooking.

Ingredients:

Muthira (horse gram) – 1cup

Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon

Red chilli powder – ¼ teaspoon

Curry leaves – few

Coconut oil – 1 teaspoon

Green chilli – 1 or 2

Method:

Pick and wash the whole green muthira 4-5 times. Drain the water and add pure water and let it soak in water for 2 hours then rinse muthira to a pressure cooker and pressure cook with 2 cups of water for 5 whistles on medium flame or till the horse gram turns soft. Once the pressure has released by itself, remove the lid of the cooker and lightly mash the cooked dal. When nicely cooked add green chilly red chilli powder turmeric powder and let it boil add salt to taste. When it comes to right consistency it shouldn’t be too watery. Once done switch of the flame and add curry leaves and coconut oil. Close the lid. It goes best with plain rice.

Note: If you want rather than adding raw coconut oil one can also give a tadka of thinly sliced shallots fried in oil.
